Robert Soderbery Departs from Cisco

Ever since David Goeckeler’s rise to power at Cisco this summer, we’ve been waiting to see what Rob Soderbery’s next move would be. Soderbery was in charge of Cisco’s enterprise networking group. But that group got handed over to Goeckeler, who is now senior vice president and general manager of the networking and security business group.

Today, Soderbery, posted a note on his LinkedIn page, saying after seven years at Cisco: “new callings beckon” and there are “new adventures to be sought.”

During his tenure at Cisco, Soderbery was a well-liked and sought-after speaker, talking about the company’s business and technology. But apparently, leading the company’s enterprise networking group became a case of being at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Although he oversaw all the enterprise products and was highly visible for much of his seven-year run, his group had reached a level of maturity. At the same time, other business groups are growing, including Cisco’s data center and security businesses.

“While data center cloud is a hot area, growing rapidly, and security is growing rapidly, in the case of the standard enterprise networking portfolio, some may want to call it mundane,” said IDC analyst Rohit Mehra, whom SDxCentral spoke to for the June story. “It’s a tough situation to be in. You are the market leader, and the market itself is not growing as rapidly as some of the other units.”
