Network operators are the great enabler of the digital economy. Their contribution and statistics are astonishing;
- Subscribers – 5.1 billion unique mobile subscribers globally (December 2017).
- Connections – 8.4 billion mobile connections worldwide (December 2017).
- Mobile Internet Subscribers – 4 billion people are currently accessing the internet via mobile in 2017, expected to reach 4.7 billion in 2020.
- GDP Contribution – The mobile ecosystem generated 4.4% of global GDP ($3.3 trillion) in 2016, a figure that will grow to $4.2 trillion in 2020.
In the Mobile World Congress 2018 opening keynote, executives from some of the world’s leading operators will offer their perspectives on the future of mobile. This wide-ranging session will highlight the technologies that will deliver innovation for consumers and businesses, from 5G to artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things to big data, virtual reality to video and beyond. The issue of gender diversity in all industries has never been more relevant. Few industries, however, have been as closely associated with this issue than the tech industry.
Over a year ago, the GSMA developed the Women4Tech programme to address gender diversity in the mobile industry. It is designed to increase female leadership in the digital age and supports UN Sustainable Development Goal #5: To achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.
MWC 2018 will feature a dedicated Women4Tech Keynote, which will bring together leaders from across the mobile and wider tech industry to highlight best practice in gender diversity and discuss action to engage and empower women in technology.
