SDDC Rediscovering its Magnificence

SDDC the abbreviation of Software defined data centre has become the latest jargon used by anybody and everybody in the Storage, Virtualization and cloud technology domain. It was forged by Steve Herrod, VMware’s former CTO in 2012.

Having got a bit of premise for this buzzword, let’s delve into its fundamentals and workings. SDDC essentially revolves around providing a facility wherein all elements of a data storage infrastructure like storage, Networking, Compute and security are Virtualised and delivered as a service. Deployment, provisioning, configuration and operation of the entire infrastructure is abstracted from hardware and implemented through software.

SDDC aspires to provide a single pane view to centrally manage all the hardware, software, information and management tasks. This single interface will enable management in gaining business intelligence and will save time to a very large extend. This concept is gaining popularity as it reduces complexity and provides a more user friendly and logical approach towards computing.

SDDC fundamentally reinforces technology to facilitate both legacy enterprise applications and cloud computing services. It has the capability to manage services in a way that would optimize utility of resources while meeting a defined level of service assurance. This is attained by virtualizing the hardware layer and providing required services. It is particularly accomplished with the following options:

  • Server Virtualization
  • Software-Defined Storage (SDS)
  • Software-Defined Networking (SDN)

SDDC provides major assistance to all enterprises struggle with data center management having very less access to IT resources. It radically simplifies the process and increases the speed of provisioning networking, server and storage resources, allowing an organization to get more flexible, agile and receptive to customers.

The benefits of SDDC are:

  • A single interface to monitor and control the entire data centre that is virtualized.
  • There is standardization across all processes and systems and reduction of time wastage and other resources is easy.
  • A business is more equipped to raise up to and handle the challenging business environment.
  • Cross functional integration across a business is possible giving a holistic view to a business.
  • Due to its feature of being virtualised, it can be accessed and provisioned from remote locations too.

SDDCs have the potential to help enterprises profoundly shift the way infrastructure has been architected, deployed and managed. The essence for enterprises is to move from a workload-defined architecture to a software-defined infrastructure architecture wherein dynamic workloads can be defined, provisioned and managed. If and when this paradigm shift to SDDCs is fully embraced and propelled to the mainstream, it will revolutionize the marketplace. While there are a few early movers, such as VMware and Cisco, It now remains to be seen how the industry moves forward with SDDC thinking and developing products designed to maximize its adoption.
