Calsoft has been regularly attending VMWorld events. Given our interest in the Storage and Virtualization domain, this is the conference, which we cannot miss. VMWorld always lives up to its promise of being a very focused conference bringing together zealous individuals in the virtualization and storage technology space and this year’s conference agenda convinces me that this year it’s going to be bigger and better. What I especially like here is the right mix of audience – IT technical professionals as well IT business decision-makers.
VMWare has done an excellent job (as always) with the well-defined agenda with separate tracks for Cloud Native Applications, End-User Computing, Hybrid Cloud, Software-Defined Data Center and Technology Deep-Dives & Future (my favorite!). There are some very nice product/ topic specific tracks like vCloud, vRealize, Virtual SAN, Big Data, Horizon 6, Integrated OpenStack, Virtual Volumes and more.
I like the theme for this year’s general sessions – Ready for Any. It will be interesting to hear it from VMWare and its customers on how VMware’s One Cloud, Any Application, Any Device architecture empowers organizations operate on- and off-premises clouds as a single, unified environment.
I plan to stop by the VMUG Hub. VMUG is the largest organization for virtualization users with 115,000 members worldwide and I would be keen learn how to connect more with the VMware User Group community.
DevOps undoubtedly is a key influencer IT organization and I am glad to see a dedicated DevOps program at VMWorld. Some of my colleagues at CalSoft are pretty excited to attend this program and learn the latest DevOps technology and solutions.
There is a vast choice of close to 400 technical sessions in various formats like Panel Discussions, Breakout Sessions, Group Discussions, and Quick Talks. The Scheduler Builder is a real blessing here. The Software-Defined Data Center track, along with its sub-tracks, promises to offer insights on how to extend virtual computing to deliver the hybrid cloud, increase agility, transform storage to lower costs, virtualize the network to improve speed and efficiency, and automate IT operations. The End-User Computing track aims to offer practical tips to securely administer and manage mobility and productivity across devices and platforms. The Hybrid Cloud track seems to focus on the business and technical benefits of VMware vCloud Air. The Cloud Native Applications track will provide information about new VMware products for enabling Cloud-Native applications, best practices, and supporting technologies.
The Technology Deep Dives & Futures is a new track which I am plan to personally follow. It promises to offer insights into VMware’s technology direction, research, innovation and products from VMware’s technology leaders within R&D and the field. Let’s see how it goes. I am hoping the deep dives to be really the deep dives.

- OpenStack with NSX Architecture Deep Dive presented by Jonathan and Ben Lin
- VMware and the ‘Internet-of-Things’ presented by Greg Bollella, Matthias Schorer and Chris Wolf
- New Ideas for Simply Better VM Automation, Business Continuity and Data Protection with and without Virtual Volumes presented by Paul Morrissey
- Real World – Architecting a vCloud for NFV Platform for Success presented by Gary Blake and Niklas Kånge
The Future of Software-Defined Storage – What does it look like in 3 years time? by Richard McDougall
I think that these topics will be hot at VMWorld 2015 –
- Cloud – Strategy, Operations Transformation, Implementation, Security, and Management
- Impact of Big Data and IoT on storage industry
- Enterprise Mobility and the Mobile Cloud Era
Overall, looks like an interesting conference. Getting an opportunity to catch up with customers and partner/vendor network under one roof is always exciting and thanks to VMWorld, we get this opportunity every year.
The conference is just a few weeks away and I am loving the way the excitement is being built up around it – especially on social media. The Facebook page of VMWorld is doing an excellent job of updating about exciting sessions and speakers, Twitter is active with live chats through #VMWorldChat and the Blog Roll looks interesting too!
