Future Trends in VDI Technology

Mobility is the demand in current organization. Enterprises are constantly looking to meet the demand of flexibility and work on-the-go for their employees. This has led companies to make their IT infrastructure more flexible and hence move towards Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI). However in the coming year advancement in the virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) space will affect the way enterprises are looking towards mobility, security, and workplace flexibility.

Here are some of the key trends we will observe in the coming year in the virtual desktop infrastructure space:

Trend # 1: We will observe more mobility and flexibility in the workplaces in the coming years. With the increase in end users demand, IT will have to adapt and shift quickly. There are virtual client computing software available which will help them in bridging the gap, securely and cost –effectively; between traditional desktop management and mobility centric devices.

Trend # 2: A Hyperconverged infrastructure integrates compute, storage, networking and virtualization resources in a single hardware appliance. This technology has moved beyond the hype and because of increased commoditization and lower prices we will see companies will start adopting it very soon. It will easily sell to VDI users, because it has the potential to simplify deployments and make it easier to allocate resources.

Trend # 3: With continuous improvement in VDI technology, it has got better at handling graphics-heavy, data-rich applications. This has enabled organizations to expand their use of VDI technology and move mission-critical applications from desktops to data centers. Now, employees can use sophisticated, graphics-rich applications from ordinary PCs.

Trend # 4: It has always been a daunting task for IT managers to convince higher-ups to invest in a system upgrade without compelling cost comparisons. Installing virtual desktops always required higher upfront cost but had long-term benefits. But with so much of advancement in the near future we will observe virtual desktops get more economical than PCs. Even right now some vendors are offering a price tag of $600 for setting up a new virtual desktop, which is less than an $800 for a new PC. One should also consider the savings on administering a network of virtual workstations.
