NextGenNAS File System

As individual NAS boxes fill to capacity, additional units must be deployed to meet storage demand. Addition of NAS devices have a direct impact on management complexity. There is hence a need to leverage existing NAS based setups and aggregate what are essentially disparate storage boxes into components of a highly configurable, manageable, scalable and robust distributed file system architecture.

The NextGenNAS file system is one such distributed architecture that provides namespace management, scalability of metadata services, effortless migration from existing NAS setups, and easy recovery from crashes.

This paper attempts to define what features will be expected from a next generation NAS aggregation solution that will allow flexible re-configuration of existing namespaces. It also provides information about the present Alpha version of the NextGenNAS file.
